DBT Program

What is DBT?

DBT stands for Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and it is an evidence based therapy for overcoming substance abuse.

What does our DBT Therapy Program involve?

The DBT approach is multidimensional and comprehensive. There are several mechanisms in DBT that converge to produce both change and acceptance in the individual. It is like a pyramid built on the foundation of mindfulness and working up to the top of interpersonal effectiveness. Each level of DBT skill enables our clients to increase their window of tolerance that will allow them to achieve their recovery goals as they accept life on life’s terms

The core goals of our Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) program is to help our clients build their coping skills and thereby their confidence to effectively handle stressful situations. The key skills we focus on teaching are mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness.

Each week a specific skill is taught, demonstrated and practiced. Practices are set and reviewed each week in the morning group. Doing this in group sets up multiple examples of the effectiveness of using tools.

DBT Topics are covered over five cycles: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and dialectical abstinence.

When does it run?

Our DBT Program runs over 5 cycles with breaks between each cycle. You can start at the beginning of any cycle. Cycles for 2025 begin the week commencing (25 March, 3 June, 29 July, 23 Sept and 28 October). We run the same topic on Tuesday at Gladesville (with zoom option) and Wednesday at Bronte.

Groups run 10.30 to 2.30 with an hour for lunch.
